Do you plan on surviving hits without suffering a mission kill?
Direct hits by the primary opponent (tank) or such no. But i suppose it would be cost effective to protect against area attack weapons or outdated or civilian weapons, that irregular fighters might have.
The job of regular infantry is to go into urban areas, including those you want to take mostly intact. Otherwise you send in AFVs.
If the other side sends tanks, you can use such vehicles against them also in an urban area. They are smaller then tanks and i suppose among all the other artificial stuff that lies around in a city, they can be hidden effectivly.
There could be a "three-man crew" with a human commander, robotic driver, and robotic gunner. The driver and gunner would be somewhat simple-minded, but with great hand-eye coordination and attention to detail. The driver makes the IQ rolls to detect feints and to tell the field hospital from the disguised command center.
I haven't (yet?) thought about it that technically. That setup would be a driver/gunner with plenty of computer assistance. If that works better then putting 2 humans on the vehicle for some definition of better that includes battle prowress and cost effectivity, after all the number crunching, then it would be the way to go.
