Johannes replied to me:
Do you plan on surviving hits without suffering a mission kill?
Direct hits by the primary opponent (tank) or such no. But i suppose
it would be cost effective to protect against area attack weapons or
outdated or civilian weapons, that irregular fighters might have.
Surviving a hit from a TL10 or TL11 tank would be close to impossible.
But there are categories to consider beyond outdated/civilian weapons ...
* Armor against the point defense systems of modern AFVs. Force them to
use serious guns rather than flyswatters.
* Armor against modern "rifle-style" weapons carried by unpowered troops
(i.e. in the 10-lb. range).
* Armor against modern "underbarrel-GL-style" weapons carried by
unpowered troops. Force them to expend LAWs.
Unless you consider every unpowered trooper "irregular" ...
Side note -- if you carry enough point defense to blunt an enemy missile
attack, either the enemy needs more missiles to saturate it or he
switches to lightspeed beam weapons which can't be intercepted. Defense
against beams reduces the weight budget for point defense, so they
become viable again. Where is the equilibrium?
If the other side sends tanks, you can use such vehicles against them
also in an urban area. They are smaller then tanks and i suppose among
all the other artificial stuff that lies around in a city, they can be
hidden effectivly.
If the sensors are designed to overcome TL11 emission cloaking and
stealth, would a bit of rubble be enough to hide?
Regards,
Onno
