"It's kind of sad to see some of the Jaws bashing go on here and the fact
that the GW staff allows it to go on without saying a word."
I should remind you that GW Micro has a very hands off approach to this
list. They don't admonish every user for every off topic message. Why?
Because as quickly as there is an off topic thread posted, it peters out
in
a day or so and things get back on track. Responding to every user who
bashes another product or who posts off topic messages takes away from
time
on Window-Eyes development. As long as we're comparing apples and
oranges,
Freedom Scientific doesn't even have a list like this. What I mean is
they
don't have a mailing list sponsored by the company that is constantly
monitored by developers of Jaws.
The issue I have is not with the Jaws software itself, as it is relatively
stable and responsive. The issue I have is with the company that now
develops it. When HJ was still around, products had more of an equal
opportunity to compete. The people in charge were people who depended on
the software they develop, and had a general concern for the blind
community. I don't know how valid the place marker lawsuit is, but if it
is
anything like the Serotek lawsuit it is frivolous and, while I have no way
to prove it it would seem that Freedom is doing whatever they can to set
other adaptive tech companies back a few steps, to distract attention away
from the real issues. Sound familiar? We need real change we can believe
in! The Freedom Scientific approach is typical politics and I cannot,
will
not support a company that promotes these types of actions in such a small
field such as the adaptive technology field. It is too small of a market
to
play these types of games. This is just one of the reasons I am a very
proud supporter of Window-Eyes and GW Micro.
Finally to Angelo, you can't always make a final decision based on threads
you read on a mailing list. Before you decide, you should at least get a
hold of a WE 7.0 demo and test drive it. If there are outstanding issues
from the 6.x days, get a hold of the GW Micro support department. They
are
extremely responsive. We may not like giving up our computers and sending
them off to GW Micro, but sometimes this is the only way they can fix a
problem that is unique to only a few users. It is frustrating, but such
is
life with technology in general, not just adaptive tech and definitely not
just with Window-Eyes. Thanks for reading!

I know this will not go over here very well but I'm going to speak up
anyway. Being Both A Jaws user and a Window Eyes user, I don't think Jaws
is nearly as bad as some here make it out to be. I'll grant you their
support isn't always great. But Jaws is quite stable and I rarely have
any
crashes of the program here. I've used Window Eyes 7 for a bit here and
find it to be stable as well. Eloquence is more sluggish than it is with
Jaws but I also understand that this is a new synthesizer for GW and their
still working on it.
It's kind of sad to see some of the Jaws bashing go on here and the fact
that the GW staff allows it to go on without saying a word. On the lists
that I run, I do not permit bashing of Window Eyes or any other readers.
I
know there are both Jaws and Window Eyes fanatics out there that swear
their
product is better than everyone else's. The fact is that each screen
reader
has it's strengths and weaknesses.
I use both products for different things. I prefer Jaws and don't go out
of
my way to bash Window Eyes users just because I think Jaws is better.
I wish people on this list that bash Jaws would stop doing so and respect
everyones right to choose their screen reader of choice without being
harassed for it.

Hi Mike, for me 5.5 was the last good working version of we. 6.0 and
6.1 introduced many problems on the web, and many editing problems
in all Microsoft products. I guess just not so very happy with we any
more, with the 150 upgrade cost of 6.0/6.1 and the cost of this 1 for
a product that just isn't very good and now not so stable anymore I
can't justify it Angelo

Angelo
Well, I can understand the hessitancy with 7.0 given numerous
comments, but why go back to 5.5.
And, as for 7.0, it seems that clean installs and updated scripts
have reduced the number of problems reported.
7.0 will work fine for 99.999% of users in the near term.
My relationship with God begins with trust.
It also continues in trust.
