Now that's a well thought out and sensible post.
I used to be guilty of just that sort of reaction when I didn't know jaws.
I also believe jaws has improved over time, partly because
window-eyes nipping at it's heels.
And my beefs with jfw have always been more about the way customers
are treated, the copy protection, and the tech support headaches, not
the technology.
We must remember that jfw was in the nt world while we were still
pounding out c:\ enter, and playing with config.sys.
How many programmers does gwmicro have?
Two, or three?
Fs probably has dozens.
But there are some things gwmicro has always excelled at.
Even though window-eyes doesn't copy protect their stuff, they enjoy
relative freedom from piracy.
People that feel like they're valued as customers don't screw they're
providers, poop in their own easter basket, how ever you want to put it.
Jaws even with their strict copy protection has been hassled with
piracy from day one.
Why, because jfw users don't feel cared about.
It's that home town mentallity verses big corporation mentallity.
I have to say, I think some of that mayberry mentallity has slipped a
bit at the shop.
The guys have been under a lot of pressure, and people aren't as
patient or kind or take the time they should.
Well, too few employees to do too many tasks.
But if gw isn't careful, they will loose the reputation they've
worked so hard to obtain.
And the blind community is a pretty small one, and word gets around.
One of my students in England isn't installing we 7 right away
because he heard bad things about it.
And this was before I ever talked to him about anything concerning we.
I didn't even ask him what he'd heard, but it just goes to show that
nobody is above or amune from that kind of advertising.
Word of mouth and user experiences far out weigh company hype, good or bad.
So it's important to stand behind what you claim a product will do
and to also make as sure as you can that it will perform as expected.

Most WE users have never experienced JFW (including yours truly).
Having never used the product, there is no way I can comment on it with
any true meaning.
I believe, however, that JFW *must* be an excellent product given the

I suspect that this cheerleading has a lot to do with a psychological need
to justify the expenditures for expensive adaptive equipment more than
anything else.
I can be a satisfied WE user (and suggest it to others) without being a
cheerleader and knocking other quality products.
And I thank the marketplace that there are good other screen readers for,
who knows, I one day may just need them.
