I am not ready to drive a car, but if we can use off the shelf products like netbook computers successfully then I see no reason why we need to ignore them for expensive notetakers that require special software, extensive training, and can't do many of the things we can do on a netbook computer without nearly the cost in money, or time. I wouldn't give up my netbook computer any time soon for any of the expensive specially designed notetakers currently being sold.

Now, on the other hand let me say that I do not believe that a netbook is appropriate for every blind person who needs a portable technology solution. For some, particularly those who are not necessarily very technically inclined, a good notetaker may be a far better solution for them because it is easier to learn than to learn Windows, with easier to understand menus, no graphics to worry about, and applications specially designed to be easier to use for the blind user.

Bottom line, there is a place for netbooks, a place for notetakers, and even a place for the slate and stylus.

If mainstream is best, why are we not driving cars? If we can use off the shelf computers just like anyone else, why not drive? After all, using a white cane or guide dog is not mainstream.
