Why not? Because you personally don't like it? Is there an etiquette document for this list which says that you shouldn't reply to update threads?
They're threads on the mailing list just like any other. He had a valid question about something which apparently broke in the update, and Eric provided a follow up. Personally, I don't mind it, and I appreciate the fact that Valve took the time to answer his question.
