Let me start by saying that I run a 24 person srcds server on an AMD
1800 with a gig of ram, I have flipped OS's between FBSD 5 and RH9.
This same server used to run CS1.5 with both a non-ff and an ff
server, both with 22 player limits. I havent seen any lag issues.

I would recommend some things to test out your lag issues:

- HDD: It's fairly common that a dying drive will introduce lag into a
server. Make sure you are using a 7200rpm drive at the minimum, SCSI
is always preferred.

- OS: Try something other than FBSD. I see better performance running
my servers natively on linux, instead of running them through an
emulator on fbsd. Make sure if you stay with FBSD that you update your
ports often and stay on top of any changees that affect your linux
emulation.

- Logs/MapChanges/etc: writing a ton of logs to the local drive is
another slow point (goes back to number 1 about the speed and
stability of your hdd). I currently write my logs to a SAN to take
load off the local disk. Map changes will introduce lag unless you
have a very fast drive.

Make sure your server is running nothing but the game server(s). A
common mistake among *nix server admins is to install Xwindows and
other services. No services besides what is REALLY necessary should be
installed.
