That's the thing. We were not discussing the server daemon (unless there is a live update method that I am not yet aware of).

We were talking about "./steam -command update" overwriting user-modified files and how to prevent it.

But yea, I'll blame Valve on the startup daemon. It's not all that either. =)

blame valve...I didn't write the daemon.

You didn't think/read. This doesn't address the issue at hand.

chmod 644 (or 640 for the paranoid)

run game daemon in the same group but different user....so game

        has read-only access...

shoot...NO daemon should have write access to config files (any
        configs that
the daemon can change should be in another file.)

            Hello

I'm sympathetic, being a noob here myself. I just
            discovered this a day or
            two ago;

            srcds_run -help

srcds_run is actually just a bash script wrapper/launcher
            for srcds_linux.
Reading it can be very informative (less srcds_run).
            Numerous comments
explain some features of the script that are not documented
            anywhere else.

In regards to the update script overwriting user-modified
            files, the Valve
devs would be wise to look at how APT/RPM package management
            systems handles
            user-modified files.

Any further info on this subject would be welcome.
              Otherwise, I'm going to
have to keep backups of my entire install directory before
            updates, then get
more specific with my backup list over time as I understand
            what files I
need to modify and are likely to be overridden during an update.

If anyone has reading recommendations on updating and
            updating for multiple
installations, and management of multiple game server
            installations in
general, that would be appreciated. I need to do some
            reading here on the
            subject soon.
