I don't get, what's the problem? You are lack of disk space or what?! We,
TF2 server owners get tons of windows(or Xbox config) files. Movie (bik)
files and other stuff that linux server doesn't need and no one complains
about that. And you want Valve to pay devs to add some kind of function
for you not to download some maps? WTF? de_airstrip is only 7MB, while
most of unused TF2 maps are 35MB and more.
IF YOU DON'T NEED THOSE MAPS - IGNORE THEM. DELETE THEM FROM mapcycle OR
amx MAPS LIST!

but that's the thing. It shouldn't be like that. In my eyes there should
be
a easy to set command line argument that prevents updating the maps
folder
at the least. Not everyone knows how tonuse chmod or chown and I'm
willing
to bet many have no clue about creating new users and setting
permissions.
Even if that worked, it seems to me that you have to break through a
fense
with a tracker instead if just climbing it with a ladder.

again...permissions might be able to solve it....if the updater lacks the
permissions to overwrite certain files (aka, user-modifiable files)....
then again...the big unknown is the updater's behavior when it
encounters a
file that it can't write to....will it gracefully skip it and go to the
next
or were the programmers lazy and make it so the updater gave a fit and
quit?
