I should go down to home depot to see what I can piece together. Even if it's ugly, I can at least spray paint it a pretty metallic blue or something.

It was far, far better than the old red and white Hulmes and Berg mute I was using at the time - in tune and good right down into the low register. It just looked a bit daft. I still have it and my students use it if, for some reason, they don't have their own mute with them.
