it's solved.
my idiocy, i guess. what happened was, the 'sender's email' field in kmail
had the default value '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'. as soon as i
changed that setting to my yahoo address, i could send. i was too sure the
problem was in the smtp setting, and didn't think of checking the 'user's
identity' part of the kmai configuration. and neither would i have thought of
it if another person hadn't suggested this.
sorry to have bothered you folks for nothing.
mr. kanjilal, let me add in answer to your corollary question that i don't
have sendmail configged on my machine because it's a standalone desktop pc,
and i have always had the idea that such machines can have no use for
sendmail. in fact, one of the first things i always do when i install a new
standalone system is uninstall sendmail and remove it from the startup
scripts.
am i right, or is there a possible way in which i can put it to use? it's
commonly known that sendmail is extremely difficult to configure and maintain.
is this correct?
