Hi Everbody,
Thank you all for the enthusiastic response. I have tried both linear and 
lba32 mode. None worked.

Yesterday, I checked the lilo documentation, and came accross this 
disturbing fact. " LILO can't boot from the, except from the 1st hard 
disk". It was written in as many words. I even tried installing it on the 
first sector of the linux partition, but all in vain. It messes up while 
loading OS from /dev/hdb. I understand that I can promptly make my hard 
disk /dev/hda by setting the jumpers, but that is an ugly tweak. Any 
suggestions ?
