In honesty, Apple hardware has become a lot more prone to failure recently.

"Back in the day," you expected your computer to last. I still run an 040
machine (Performa 630CD) whose PRAM battery still works, hardware never fails,
and hasn't crashed in the six months it's been on. I've turned it off once, for
about ten minutes.
You'll find similar storis of old Macs from others.

(Old Macs broke too; I had hard drives die, and a floppy drive or two, but a
logic board replacement for me or anyone I knew was, 5-10 years ago, completely
unheard of.)

The past few years, I feel that Macs have been built to be more expendable.
My iMac died horribly (Rev.A) in a way that left the motherboard the only
functional piece of equipment. Why? To the best of my knowledge, because I left
it on and it overheated, despite being ventilated. Being on this list for
no more than a months or two, I've heard similar stories, in a degree which
is somewhat disturbing.

Towers are better (G3, G4), though I've been shipped a G4 dead out of the box,
and seen a G3 motherboard go.

Powerbooks, as far as I can tell, are worse. The new Titaniums and iBooks may
fix this, but the black PowerBook G3s, including Bronze Keyboard models, seem
to drop like flies. I deal with 40? 50? of them, and at least 10 have had to
go in for repairs, some more than once. My iBook (tangerine, old) had to be
shiped back as well because of erratic trackpad behavior and a broken NIC.

I think buying a Mac is still the right choice, if you're looking between Mac
and Windows. And I hope the hardware issues get better.

But if I could afford it, I'd sure buy AppleCare.
