Internal modems in iMacs have a kinda poor reputation. You'd be better off getting an external USB modem, at this point, IMO.

Good idea (if the modem is truly dead) but a much better idea is to simply use this as an excuse to get broadband if it's available to you.


Broadband doesn't cost one iota more than dialup + separate phone line, indeed it sometimes costs less. It truly astounds me how many people who have the option to switch and can afford to switch would rather pay $25-30/month to the phone company for a second phone line and $20-$25 to AOL or whatever rather than pay $45/month flat for VASTLY better speed and reliability.

(and yes, I know it's cheaper if you don't have second phone line, but again dialup is 20-30 TIMES slower, has innumerable problems, dictates when and for how long you can be online if you don't use a separate line and wastes extraordinary amounts of time if you're doing much beyond email and basic web surfing.)
