Can be replaced, but it's not simple, and I don't know of a source for replacement.
Internal modems in iMacs have a kinda poor reputation. You'd be better off getting an external USB modem, at this point,
IMO.

Maybe you're right, but I already have both USB ports in use. True, I could plug and unplug everything constantly, but that gets on one's nerves after a while. I have no qualms to getting inside the iMac and messing around with the hardware. I actually kinda enjoy it. Besides, I need to replace the clock battery and that's a real pain without taking it apart.
you can check with local Apple Authorized Resellers - technically, they're not supposed to just sell parts, but many do anyway. it's cheaper (usually) if you give them the dead modem in exchange. most will require that you allow them to do the service, in which case you'll have to pay labor.
if you're patient, you could probably find one on eBay in fairly short order. you may also want to try LEM's swap list - see the footer of this (and every other) message for a URL to LEM.
