Chas, I don't see how it would be that hard. iTunes 4 seems to have two differences from previous iTunes: the ability to handle AAC files in addition to MP3, and a site-specific ftp function like Software Update. System 9 has Software Update so it shouldn't be hard to release an update to the last System 9 version of iTunes with the ftp function.

You are overlooking many of the underlying XML/SOAP type technologies that power the iTMS. And as I've said, Apple can't just slap a couple of extra technologies into iTunes for 9 and throw it out there: it has to be integrated into the existing system (if feasible), tested against numerous possible configurations, etc.

This is more time/money/resources than Apple wishes to expend for an obsolete OS.

Yes, I called OS 9 obsolete. Look up the word before you flame me, as they say in "The Princess Bride" -- "It does not mean what you think it means."

The reality of the situation is that OS 9.2.2 is probably the last or penultimate update OS 9 will ever see. The only reason Apple will ever update it again is to maintain compatibility with future versions of OS X. All development effort at Apple is focused on OS X and is never going back. OS 9.2.2 is a damn fine OS and I can see why many people cling to it, but you know 8.1 was a damn fine OS too, but people moved on. As time goes by, it will make less and less sense to rely on 9 exclusively when future versions of OS X offer so many advantages. For now -- and possible for quite some years yet -- some people can afford to resist the tide, and that's fine. But it doesn't mean the tide hasn't turned.

There are a couple of silly little games and mini-utilities in OS 9 that I am so fond of I have even considered re-learning some level of programming so that I can "port" (recreate) them in OS X to get exactly what I want: the program design of a discontinued favourite with the numerous advantages of OS X. I'm not one of the "OS 9 users are computing Amish" type people. But anyone who's been around long enough to grow to love OS 9 should know that change is the one reliable constant in the technology world, and OS X is just another aspect of that, just as OS 9 was to OS 8 and so on.
