Chas, I don't see how it would be that hard. iTunes 4 seems to have two differences from previous iTunes: the ability to handle AAC files in addition to MP3, and a site-specific ftp function like Software Update. System 9 has Software Update so it shouldn't be hard to release an update to the last System 9 version of iTunes with the ftp function.
You are overlooking many of the underlying XML/SOAP type technologies that power the iTMS. And as I've said, Apple can't just slap a couple of extra technologies into iTunes for 9 and throw it out there: it has to be integrated into the existing system (if feasible), tested against numerous possible configurations, etc.
Ok, Jeremy, Kyle, & Chas, I understand it better now. MY problem is that I'm stuck with a dial-up connection for the next several years until I can move a couple of miles down the road.
