I just signed up for that yesterday and I think it should at least be
available for O.S. 9.2.2 users. That operating system isn't that old
yet!!!!! They should make it available to them for awhile (so they can
experience what its like), and then kinda phase out 9.2.2 or "Classic"
compatibility. Once people get hooked on it, then they could be
forced to upgrade.

I agree that it would be nice if the iTMS was available for OS 9 users, and perhaps it would even be theoretically possible to do -- but Apple is not going to spend that kind of money to implement the technologies underlying the iTMS into OS 9.

Chas, I don't see how it would be that hard. iTunes 4 seems to have two differences from previous iTunes: the ability to handle AAC files in addition to MP3, and a site-specific ftp function like Software Update. System 9 has Software Update so it shouldn't be hard to release an update to the last System 9 version of iTunes with the ftp function. Now I don't know what the AAC file format would require to work under System 9. Apple has always been a little shortsighted regarding their installed customer base.

well... actually... the Music Store portion of iTunes is a big hold up. the engine used to drive the Store within iTunes is WebCore, the webpage rendering engine in Safari. As such, it's written in Cocoa, not Carbon... so bringing this code over to OS 9 would be fairly costly and definitely non-trivial.

AAC and such wouldn't be a big deal - the Store itself, though, would.
