I called Applecare today and they told me that it is no longer possible to get the regular iChat and that they had not heard of any problems with the iChat AV. They told me the only option to possibly get back the original iChat is to archive and install which is just a big hassle.
Sorry to hear that your AV's not working well for you. Works fine here, even with my paltry MHz and RAM. In fact it works so well that I don't even use it because otherwise I wouldn't get anything done. :-)
If you really want to go back to boring old text-chat then try this Pacifist project for fun and functionality.
There's a little shareware app called Pacifist, available here: http://www.charlessoft.com/ It's commonly used to extract a particular piece from an install package.
Download Pacifist, install it. Insert your Jag install CD. (#1, probably?) Follow directions. Pacifist will make all the various components of the content of the CD visible. Look down the list to find "Contents of Essentials". Open that folder, look for Applications. Open that folder. Look for iChat .app. Select it and choose "Install". This will replace iChat AV with a copy of the original iChat.
