Thanks for the tips ! I hate going back to the old boring iChat but I did end up doing an archive and install and got a fresh copy of the original ichat. Also, things seem to be working much better now...before the install, I was getting my icons bouncing but not stopping or opening the program, or the icons bouncing and then freezing mid-bounce. None of that is happening since the archive and install - I had not received your mail at that time :-(
Ah well, save that Pacifist tip for later. It is a handy app to have for "selective" installing. Sounds like a fresh OS install has served you well. (Repair permissions now! :-) Maybe if things seem stable you will feel like giving iChat AV another chance. It really is a cool app.
