I don't know what you mean by "you CANNOT send plain text mail from within the AOL
software". I am using NO OTHER SOFTWARE to send this email.
Why would someone go to the web page to send plain text email? Simple, because
their default is to send HTML and if you want to send plain text, they made it
possible by simply going to the webpage. It takes less than 10 seconds to reach my
mailbox on the webpage (dial up, 56K).
