I don't know anything about setting AOL preferences so that your email will be plain text. Let me repeat: To send plain text email, go to www.aol.com, access your mailbox from there (click on the Mailbox icon), and send your email from there. You can read mail, send mail, save mail, look at old mail, basically anything you can do from the main mailbox in AOL. The only difference is from www.aol.com it's plain text.
If you are using MAOL 5.x, then yes you CAN send plain text; if you are using MAOL 10.3, tell me where in the AOL preferences you selected plain text.

So your solution is to launch Safari or other web browser, go to http://webmail.aol.com , write and send the message, then go back to AOL. Seems very convoluted to me. In the 15 years I've been an AOL member (yes, I've been a member longer than AOL has been around) the number of gyrations Apple users have to go through has kept increasing.
