However, Paula, the bottom line is that you CANNOT send plain text mail from within the AOL software. Why would someone go to the AOL web page to send mail from the computer that has their AOL software installed?

If you are using MAOL 5.x, then yes you CAN send plain text; if you are using MAOL 10.3, tell me where in the AOL preferences you selected plain text. There have been a lot of complaints about AOL's MIME only default setting. I subscribe to a list that strips out any MIME and all that appears are lines of type that say the message contained some other than plain text. Of course, I don't use AOL for email lists, I use Eudora.
