Managed to get me a copy of OS X.2.3 Server, and I am not sure what to do
with it!
Okay, you really, really, really, really, really need to not be installing OS X Server. It is not a toy.
This is a $500 operating system (for 10 users) or a $1000 operating system (for unlimited users). From your tone and complete lack of understanding, I seriously doubt you paid for this. People do not blow $500+ on a product they know nothing about.
I have an iMac G3 400Mhz/192MB/10GB and an iMac G4 1Ghz/512MB/80GB. The iMacNeither one of these machine is particularly well-suited to running a server.
G3 currently has 9.2.2 and the G4 has 10.2.8.
I think the fundamental problem is that you don't know what you're getting into. This is a SERVER OS. It is designed to turn your computer into a server that is used by other machines. In effect you are sending YOUR computing power to THEM. I seriously doubt that is what you intended to do.
If you want to set up simple sharing, or run your own mailserver, you don't need a server OS to do that -- you can use plain ol' OS X. All the tools are there.
My question is - If I install Server on the G4, will I lose anything or do I
just have stuff to gain?
You sacrifice your computer as a personal tool (since it will be busy serving others). You "gain" the ability to run your machine as a server to a large network of other machines -- that's really all OS X Server is good for. I suppose it could be run as plain ol' OS X, but why on earth would you pay five times as much for it just to do that? Unless -- you stole it, of course.
Is it compatible with everything that the normal user edition is?
No.
No.Are upgrades available the same way... E.g. Can I use the software update to update to OS X Server.2.8?
Basically Tell me everything I will lose and gain!
Gain: stuff you clearly don't understand.
Lose: possibly a great deal -- including money, property and conceivably freedom.
