I don't know Charles line of work, but I wrote some code for money for a bit. If he programs or his livelihood depends on software sales he is reacting the same way I did at the time. It's hard work and the world these days treats intellectual property like they are owed a free copy because they want to try it or because they feel the price is too high to buy it.
Charles may have gotten a little hot because of a sensitivity to the subject. He jumped to a conclusion and overreacted without knowing the facts. Have you ever been guilty of that?
From what I have seen of Charles on this list he is quick to judge and sometimes cranky. Occasionally he is a little short with neophytes.
BUT- you would be hard pressed to find anyone else as willing to help or as knowledgeable as Charles on this list.
Eddie I think, therefore iMac (patent pending on usage)

Chas,
Will you please stop being a complete a**hole in every post? I asked for
help not a lecture.
It is clearly none of your business where I acquired it, but for your information I was given it and decided to play around.
I completely resent your theory that I know nothing - and even should that
be the case it is not within your right to voice such a thing on a list
where the main point is the swapping of ideas and the helping of other list
members. For your information I am fully aware that OS X Server is a
business tool, but being given a copy, I surely would have been expected to
try it out, thus I asked for a little help, and did not require a response
like yours.
Though the information you provide is clearly valuable to the list, It isn't
worth experiencing the depths of your angry mind in order to achieve the
desired result, and though you are aware that you are a so called "Expert",
you must understand that some of the people on this list have no clue about
the iMac that they use, and trust a friendly note from a kind stranger in
order to resolve their problem, rather than an annoying teacher figure.
Next time you feel like being an a**hole, please vent yourself off list,
otherwise may join the queue of people who have installed a "Chas" filter.

Managed to get me a copy of OS X.2.3 Server, and I am not sure what to
do
with it!
Okay, you really, really, really, really, really need to not be installing OS X Server. It is not a toy.
This is a $500 operating system (for 10 users) or a $1000 operating system (for unlimited users). From your tone and complete lack of understanding, I seriously doubt you paid for this. People do not blow $500+ on a product they know nothing about.
I have an iMac G3 400Mhz/192MB/10GB and an iMac G4 1Ghz/512MB/80GB. The iMac G3 currently has 9.2.2 and the G4 has 10.2.8.
Neither one of these machine is particularly well-suited to running a server.
I think the fundamental problem is that you don't know what you're
getting into. This is a SERVER OS. It is designed to turn your computer
into a server that is used by other machines. In effect you are sending
YOUR computing power to THEM. I seriously doubt that is what you
intended to do.
If you want to set up simple sharing, or run your own mailserver, you don't need a server OS to do that -- you can use plain ol' OS X. All the tools are there.
My question is - If I install Server on the G4, will I lose anything or do I just have stuff to gain?
You sacrifice your computer as a personal tool (since it will be busy
serving others). You "gain" the ability to run your machine as a server
to a large network of other machines -- that's really all OS X Server
is good for. I suppose it could be run as plain ol' OS X, but why on
earth would you pay five times as much for it just to do that? Unless
-- you stole it, of course.
Is it compatible with everything that the normal user edition is?
No.
No.Are upgrades available the same way... E.g. Can I use the software update to update to OS X Server.2.8?
Basically Tell me everything I will lose and gain!
Gain: stuff you clearly don't understand. Lose: possibly a great deal -- including money, property and conceivably freedom.
