A few months ago I was listening to some computer talk show on the
radio and they were talking about how a PC hard drive is never
completely erased or overwritten, but that macs can be using disk
utility. I think that secure empty trash would be enough to solve the
issue that we've been discussing.

True - destroying the drive would certainly remove any possibility of
retrieving the old data.
However, I am hoping that zeroing out the drive a couple of times, as
a few people have suggested here - will pretty much eliminate any
chance that my personal data could be retrieved.
That is the most I can realistically do as it is not my computer.
