I have just barely moved up to OS X. My reasons
for staying with 9 for so long? I do graphic
design... I have a bunch of apps that aren't OS X
native. They run OK in Classic, but slower. So I'm
running Classic all the time... which makes me
wonder if it's worth it to be in X.
Though my switch to X on my work machine was
recent - I have had it on the kids iMacs for some
time. And even after setting it up and installing
things and setting up their accounts and helping
them with homework... I still don't 'get' OS X. I
haven't figured out how to think in OS X, and I
feel like a snail trying to inch my way through it.
What I love about OS 9 - I know it. It makes sense
to me. It's a familiar friend. I want to get
another little iMac and keep it a 9 only machine.
I've got a two year old that will soon be ready to
use all those great older software titles that her
big brothers used. For now, she uses JumpStart
Baby in Classic... and I find it a little freaky
how the graphics all break up when the machine
goes to sleep.
My boys - they like X, they're OK with 9, too. And
their on PCs at school. They're getting a
well-rounded computer education. They'll learn the
ins and outs of both platforms (and more) as they
grow up.
Maybe more info than you wanted to know. But
that's my story.

Okay, after the discussion on Classic mode, I got thinking, and I've
decided to do social experiment. :)
So, I want to hear from everyone on here who still uses OS 9 or 8 on
machines that are capable of running OS X. If you have a machine that
won't run OS X and can't afford a new machine, please don't answer this
because your reasons are obvious enough.
But, if you have a machine that can run OS X but choose not to, or if
you could easily afford a new machine that can run OS X but choose not
to, I want to hear your reasons why. As a computer geek, I am really
curious as to why anyone would use OS 8/9 when there is a much better
OS available for a reasonable price. If you think OS 9 is better, I
want to know your reasons. Also, if you are still using Classic a lot
in OS X, please give me those reasons as well.
Let me also say that I have some old Macs laying around that I continue
to use for various purposes that run old versions of the OS (in fact I
have an LC running right now to clean up an external SCSI I sold to
someone on the swap list). I do this because there is nothing wrong
with the machines and they are still useful for some things, like kids
games. So, don't bother replying with those type situations. I'm
interested in main-machine usage only, not hobby machines or special
purpose machines that still get used. These machines generally
wouldn't fit in the "can run OS X" category anyway.
After I have read all the initial round of responses, I will write one
blanket reply and may quote from several emails. I want to understand
why people even care whether or not Classic mode will still be
available on the Intel Macs. I also want to understand why people tend
to hang on to things as they are and often choose not to be in the
stream of progress, always looking for better tools.
Just curious,
Todd
