if you have a machine that can run OS X but choose not to, or if you

Me and mine (housemates and clients) have all sorts of G3 and G4
Macs, all running OS 8.6 or 9.2.2. I use OS X now and then to test
things. But for the most part, we do 8/9.
OS 8/9 is 99.999% stable for the things we do.
As for OS X's stability... *smirk* My housemate's 15" PowerBook G4
was useless for 4 hours today, while it was locked in a BSOD.
Many of the apps and a few of the peripherals my clients require do
not run in OS X or Classic. Their next upgrades, as their
depriciation cycle permits, will be to Linux and Windows.
As a computer geek, I am really curious as to why anyone would use
OS 8/9 when there is a much better OS available for a reasonable
price.
A reasonable price? OS X is one of the most expensive operating
systems on the market today. It's total cost of ownership, if you
keep it up to date, is currently FAR higher than that of even Windows!
if you are still using Classic a lot in OS X, please give me those
reasons as well.
Our 15" PowerBook G4, that of course cannot be booted into OS 9, runs
Classic all the time. The primary app Karen uses is an old Tetris
variant. She said something about finger removal if I tried to
replace her old Tetris with any of the new ones I've found. The
other Classic app she likes is an old AppleWorks. The new AppleWorks
has fewer translators and always crashes when manipulating her large
database.
I also want to understand why people tend to hang on to things as
they are and often choose not to be in the stream of progress,
always looking for better tools.
If I have a task to do, and a reasonable method to do it, I'm not
likely to spend $ $ $ $ $ just to do it in a more modern fashion.
And, I guess, a lot of it is about the "killer app". I have yet to
see anything running on OS X that was just so compelling I *had* to
have it.
Why does it now require a supercomputer to do in OS X what my trusty
PowerMac 7300/180 does in OS 9? Ok, so Mozilla is slower on the
7300. But it's rock solid - never crashes. Karen has a list of
dozens of web sites she has to remember to NOT visit in Safari.
FWIW,
- Dan.
