Well, I have a flat panel iMac that can only run OS X, but I recently
got a 350MHz iMac. I really don't like Classic mode, mainly because I
find it doesn't work well.
Actually, if you were to ask what my favorite Mac was (i've had about
7), I would say my PowerMac 5260. It was extremely stable, even when I
did things to it I knew I shouldn't do, and that was running System 7.5
and OS 8.1. It is just so easy to recover from a screw up - almost all
the time all I had to do was pop in a System disk and take out some
little gadget-type extension I had put in.
I was used to System 7 and OS 8/9 from school - thats what we had from
first grade until fourth grade, when I got my first computer (a used LC
575). So OS 9 and lower is always what I think of when I think of a
Mac or Apple.
OS X is too complicated, IMO. If you want to really dig into the
System, it gets to (IMO) be too much like digging in a Windows system
folder. Stuff is everywhere with intimidating names and icons and
stuff - it looks like you could cause the whole thing to explode if you
click on it. (well, I'm exaggerating, but still ... ) OS 9, all there
is is the System Folder, and even then, most of the stuff is pretty
much understandable.
OS X is too picky - there aren't enough ways to customize it. I
remember Kaleidoscope and things like that - I wouldn't dare put any of
that onto OS X - too many horror stories of OS X soiling itself when
you install something like that. heh, I also miss the "Appearance"
control panel - all the themes and the "User Interface" sounds...
I haven't had enough time to get to know OS X... I knew the ins and
outs of Mac OS 9 and earlier by time I left 4th grade, especially since
I had my own 'beige' Mac running OS 8.
You don't have to fiddle with permissions and those darn UNIX
maintenance things. Windows isn't even that bad.
Now, a little about me - I just finished 8th grade - so the Macs I have
mentioned above were obviously used. I didn't even have an internet
connection until i got my first 350MHz iMac. I also got quite a
collection of old MacAddict CD's when I bought my PowerMac 5260 - so I
had a great time fiddling with all those... GoMac (? i think) that
added a Start type menu that acted something like the OS X dock,
Kaleidoscope, DoubleScroll, Holiday Lights, AfterDark, and even these
annoying eyeballs that you could add to the center of your Menu bar
that would follow you around.
Well, I hope I wrote enough there... ;-)
Oh, by the way, I love Expos and the Dock - i couldn't live without
those.

Okay, after the discussion on Classic mode, I got thinking, and I've
decided to do social experiment. :)
So, I want to hear from everyone on here who still uses OS 9 or 8 on
machines that are capable of running OS X. If you have a machine that
won't run OS X and can't afford a new machine, please don't answer
this because your reasons are obvious enough.
