Subject: Apple Forever!
The ad sells the basic computer (hopefully the keyboard and
mouse, too) for the rock bottom price of $499.
To give credit to Dell, I think they generally DO include the kb and
mouse -- but if they don't explicitly mention it as included then
they may not. I've often seen a kb/mouse combo on their site for $49.
No where does it
mention having a modem, which I would think is pretty well standard
today.
Likely, but not guaranteed. Apple is but one of several PC makers who
are starting to drop the telephone modem from standard equipment --
in Apple's case, you can buy a $20 USB-powered modem (little bigger
than a flash drive!) if your model doesn't come with it. I would
think that by 2007 Apple won't have ANY models with internal modems,
and by 2009 nobody will.
No where does it mention the software it comes with; that is
Microsoft Office or similiar.
No, nothing similar. If it came with MS Office they would
contractually obligated to promote that. No, the bargain PCs usually
come with MS *Works*, one of the biggest oxymorons since "honest
politician." Works is an incompatible NIGHTMARE compared to Office.
It does offer Windows XP for home /
office.
You mean "XP Home Edition." They'll sell you XP Office for an extra
Ben Franklin, and believe me it's worth it (compared to XP Home).
The styling is very nice. (Looks like a new Toyota or Nissan)
I thought you said it was nice! :)
and
they offer 48X CD Burner, a 80G Hard Drive, 256MD Shared DDR SDRAM
and and Intel Pentium 4. The eMac offers most of that in their
standard $799 price with no throw-ins or gimmicks.
PLUS the eMac includes these features that the Dell DOESN'T:
*Two POWERED Firewire ports (that's a big deal for videocam owners,
older iPod owners and people who use self-powered FW hard drives,
flash card readers, scanners, etc)
*iLife -- BEST IN SHOW music management, photo management, video
editing and DVD making software. NOTHING in the PC world -- at ANY
price -- even comes CLOSE.
*AppleWorks -- even five years old and crippled by OS X standards, it
STILL whips the pants off Microsoft Works -- and can read and write
MS Word and Excel files, something Works *can't do!*
*iChat -- together with an iSight camera, this is world-class
videoconferencing (almost) OUT OF THE BOX.
*Safari -- much faster and all-around better browser than IE. (to be
fair, Firefox is a terrific PC browser and it's a free download --
but it's not included and Safari is!)
*TextEdit, FontBook, iCal, ImageCapture, Mail, QuickTime Player, Disk
Utility, Keychain, Airport (which I think is standard now, isn't
it?), Grab, Services, Migration Assistant and more -- all either
demonstratably better than what's offered standard with Windows, or
does things no built-in Windows program does at all!
Plus it's more beautiful and QUIETER than most any PC on the market,
and did I mention that it comes with OS X, the only OS *in the world*
that can easily run all the OTHER operating systems within it?
If all of the above isn't worth an extra $100 or so (which is what,
$25/year averaged over a typical four-year lifespan?) to you ... you
just don't get it and probably never will.
Yet while the
world reeks from the latest computer viruses, my experiences with
Mac's is that they're pretty much virus free.
Top that, Dell!
Suggested edit: delete "pretty much." :)
Notice that I didn't even have to bring up THAT important (and HEAVY
money-and-aggravation-saving factor) to make the case!
Cheers
Chas
