Residential-class xDSL and Cable are down so often that a
v.90 modem is and will be a necessity for a long time to come.

Maybe where YOU live ... we just had our first serious cable modem disruption (12 hours!) in FIVE YEARS here.*

*I'm not counting the periods during the hurricanes that passed through our area last fall -- the power was out, so I don't know if the cable modem was working or not. :)

If the power was out, then your cable modem was out. If your cable modem is on a UPS then I'd guess there's about an 80% chance that the IP connectivity was lost anyway because of badly managed upstream dependancies.

I'll betcha there are hours and hours of outtages you just haven't noticed.

Excluding major natural catastrophies, POTS systems provide, by nationwide average, 99.99% uptime. They actually do 5-nines (99.999%) in many areas (a bit over 5 minutes of downtime per year). #1 outtage cause: Vandalism - people taking hatchets to cables etc.

xDSL has yet to get over 95%.

And cable modem systems are in the 70 to 80% range.

Due to the higher dependance on IP networks (especially for VoIP), the Bells and Cables are supposedly working hard to improve these numbers. Since they've been dragging their feet, their hands may be forced by FCC rulemaking over the next year or two.

IMO, the Bells have a much easier task because most of their outtages are last mile. The Cables have serious infrastructure issues.
