I thought Apple's external USB modem was like $49? :P

I stand corrected -- there are OTHER usb modems for less, and that must be what I was thinking of.

While I applaud the death of internal modems (reliability & quality
issues)... IMO shipping any lower end Mac without one is simply
cheapskateness on Apple's part.

To the best of my knowledge, NO consumer-level Mac ships without a (telephone) modem -- only the high-end machines.

Residential-class xDSL and Cable are down so often that a
v.90 modem is and will be a necessity for a long time to come.

Maybe where YOU live ... we just had our first serious cable modem disruption (12 hours!) in FIVE YEARS here.*

*I'm not counting the periods during the hurricanes that passed through our area last fall -- the power was out, so I don't know if the cable modem was working or not. :)
