No where does it mention having a modem, which I would think is
pretty well standard today.
Likely, but not guaranteed. Apple is but one of several PC makers
who are starting to drop the telephone modem from standard equipment
-- in Apple's case, you can buy a $20 USB-powered modem (little
bigger than a flash drive!) if your model doesn't come with it. I
would think that by 2007 Apple won't have ANY models with internal
modems, and by 2009 nobody will.
I thought Apple's external USB modem was like $49? :P
While I applaud the death of internal modems (reliability & quality
issues)... IMO shipping any lower end Mac without one is simply
cheapskateness on Apple's part. And proof that the people making
decisions have company-paid-for business-class xDSL or Cable at their
homes. Residential-class xDSL and Cable are down so often that a
v.90 modem is and will be a necessity for a long time to come.
