70-80% uptime means that you cannot get a connection between 73 and
110 days per year! And at even 95% you speak of downtime of more than
18 days per year!

Thanks for saving me the trouble of pointing out that Dan's claims are a load of bollocks. While Dan is probably right that there are small outages in my service that I've never noticed (since I'm not on the net 24/7), my guess is that the figures he Googled up are seriously out of date.

To have even just 70 days a year's worth of outages, you'd have to have a DAILY AVERAGE of a little over four and a half hours worth of outage.

While I'm not monitoring the stuff 24 hours a day, I think I'd notice an average of 4.5 hours per day in downtime. As I said, I've been on our local cable connection since the first day they offered high speed, and I can count the number of non-emergency downtime hours on this system using only my fingers and toes -- not bad for over five years.

Now, Adelphia ... they serve another part of town, they could be a different story :)

I know for a fact that my cable modem is not down for an hour & a half every day. My home LAN is on a VPN to my employer's network, and my VPN router is one of the boxes pinged every minute (or 5 minutes or something). It goes typically down only once a month -- for no more than 5 minutes.

This is with Earthlink cable via Time Warner.
