The default session timeout for IMail's web messaging is 12 minutes, and
it's not configurable. To determine if that is the problem, open a new
window while the file upload is going on, and keep the current webmail
session going during the upload process.

I doubt it. The only way to transfer a file from a client to a server
using a standard web page is via http protocol; if it was ftp, some kind
of ftp client would be required on the client side.

Most web application servers have a configurable request timeout
setting... it's reasonable to assume iwebmsg.exe has this hardwired-in
somewhere. Time for the hard-core programmers at Ipswitch to put in their
2 cents... :)
