True, but user%virtualdomain@[a.b.c.d] is likely to work:

>  rcpt  to:kim.lagerstedt%scanfrentz.com@[192.89.123.25]
>  250       2.1.5       Recipient       address       syntax      Ok;
>  rcpt=<kim.lagerstedt%scanfrentz.com@[192.89.123.25]
