We had about a thousand users, and after a number of complaints and my
nightmares about blacklisting, we finally threw in the towel and went to
SMTP Auth. There were a few hickups, and one or two users still using
ancient mail programs like Eudora 1.44 (if you can believe it) being told to
upgrade, the whole thing was over in about a week. Now, for fun, I watch as
all the spammers try to use local addresses to relay spam and get rejected,
and realize that for all that time we were open relays.
