If the user uses an AV program, sometimes this will alter the incoming
login/server fields so that incoming mail is routed through its internal
engine...in these cases our customers need to use the manual entry; 

We have only seen one case where Outlook 2002 would not authenticate for
SMTP; fortunately user was on a dedicated office connection and we
whitelisted the IP in IMAIL

I've seen some inconsistency regarding the settings in Outlook/Outlook 
Express for "my server requires authentication"  Most of our customers
only 
have to check that and leave the default advanced setting of "use the
same 
username password as POP access" (or whatever that option says).  Some
of 
them still can't auth and have to use the "use the following
information" 
option and manually enter the same username and password they use for
POP.
