No, that's a perfect way to set yourself up--as long as you also have
MX records.

Only broken versions of IMail.

The "implicit MX" only takes effect when there are no MX records, so
there's nothing wrong with delivering to the A when the domain is not
set up by someone knowledgeable enough to separate the two to reflect
the actual separation of server functions.

Only the known-broken versions. It is fixed now, AFAIK.
