Old versions of IMail would use the A record under some rare cases even when the MX record did exist. That was fixed quite some time ago. There have been occasional reports of the problem happening since then, but it looks like it may be due to DNS problems, not IMail problems (specifically, having multiple DNS servers listed, one of which doesn't allow recursion).

I am currently convinced that IMail v8 doesn't have any problems with using the correct DNS records.
