Very interesting discussion. What saddens me and is a testament to the outlook of society as a whole is the following:
For the most part, laws are enacted for one of 2 reasons: 1. To enforce those principles/ideals/morals that benefit and/or protect society and individuals but that society or groups therein exploit, abuse or ignore to the detriment of society and individuals. 2. To benefit selected groups, usually with political overtures. Laws are written when society/groups refuse to follow that which is principally and/or morally and/or ethically correct. Everyone knows what is black and what is white. It is how we deal with what is gray that defines us.
