> What's the last entry in the previous day's log? Last entry in 1041127.log was from xxx.xx.xxx.xx CAPA [27/Nov/2004:23:59:59] -ERR unknown or invalid command in this state [CAPA]
A little interesting as all previous logs end with a QUIT condition at least 5 seconds before midnight. When this ERR log item was written, POP3S would have had a new log item to write immediately into the new log of '1041128.log'. Depending on how carefully the file io routines were written in POP3S, the previous log file may not have been closed before attempting to open the new log. I now note that all previous log files have a last modified time of 11:59 PM. but '1041127.log' has a last modified time of 12:00 AM. Since POP3S is multithreaded, and if using a single file handle that is not protected with a mutex, then one thread may have been still writing the above ERR item at midnight when another thread tried to reuse the handle and create the new '1041128.log' log file. I will monitor this for confirmation of pattern on fail. Right now I only have 10 files in my log directory, with 1041128 being the only failed log. > Are you using popauth? No.. would like to though, that is why I am trying to determine the cause of unreliable POP3S logs. > When you say your own processes have no problem, what exactly do you > mean? Have you got custom programs that play with the log file? No, my routines do not touch the pop logs, but I meant to say that I am using a custom in-house plugin filter that incorporates antiSPAM, antiVIRUS, antiRELAY, domain limits, max size, spoofing, etc, and in that filter we log the results to a log in a different directory, never a problem opening a new log file. If I cannot solve this problem, and proceed to use SMTPrcv with the popAuth feature, I will have to use a 'AT' fired batch file to stop and restart POP3S at 12:00 each night to ensure POP login logs. Actually the whole issue is silly. This is probably the last Windows machine on my side of the network. Just through inertia we have not moved to a postfix/sendmail arrangement on a Linux or BSD machine. I only have 100 clients or so on this corp. domain and other than being plagued by relay attempts IMS was doing the job just fine. On the other side of our network we have thousands of email users on a BSD box.
