I meant we could change our password file to contain the full cell name.
As for symlinks we don't have have any in the supported trees that use
/afs/ir/ in a symlink, we use relative links. We treat /afs/ir/ the same way we
would treat /:/ or /.:/fs in DFS. Its a convenience and nothing more. It can be
abused and can break things in a global environment.

I'm not trying to argue that the symlink is a good thing, at this point it
would
cause more trouble then its worth to remove that link. I'm sure we would
get many more complaints (locally) by removing that link then we would
ever get from people outside our cell.

Internally we never compile any software using AFS paths at all. Everything
is compiled to look for a local directory (/usr/local, /usr/pubsw, /usr/newsw,
/usr/leland, etc). That is so we can move whole trees onto a local disk,
into DFS, etc.

Besides, DFS is just around the corner ;-)
