 I am not sure if current XOrg is 100% compatible with XFree. As BlackDown's
Java3D readme says, XFree 4.1 or later is required

You may need a check-list:
* Check if your video drivers supports kernel 2.6.x;
* Check if your video drivers supports XOrg;
* run glxinfo
* run glxgears
* check Xorg config files
* call FC2 support
* call ATI Support

I saw some NVidia & XOrg how-to's but none about ATI .
