The US lobbies. That's not something new zealand can change in the short term. If your politicians sell you and your fellow citizens downriver because a few lobbyers (funded by foreign funds no less) lean on you, then you deserve every ounce of blame you get, and more.
It doesn't reflect well on the US either that they let this shit happen, but that's a separate issue. Hey, at least the pirate bay folks are kicking absolute ass in their court case.
