Actually Zed Shaw is using quite a bit of python, for his opensource
project http://lamsonproject.org/

he's also using Django as web framework, as you can see
in his blog entry here http://zedshaw.com/blog/2009-07-19.html

In terms of community, there certainly seems to have no shortage
of controversies, such as the one at Golden Gate Ruby Conference.
