As this is "experimental", I wonder if:

you can go with a totally different connector?, or

instead of using a bolt, drilling a hole down the center, and then cutting a slot,

1. start with a length of threaded rod, correct diameter  and thread size

2. spin a nut on each end just beyond the length required

3. use the nuts to hold the threaded rod in a vise

4. use a small dremel type tool to cut a slot in the rod to accept the cable eliminating the need to center drill
