Olwyn, You must be using the Descendant Chart report since the charts are the only ones which use unknown for a missing spouse. In narrative reports there is a marriage wording setting which uses "someone" as the default for a missing spouse. There is no way to turn off the use of Unknown on those chart reports. The leave it blank option that others have mentioned apply only to the screen display.
There is also no way to add the sentence "Had no children" in the charts either, again that wording is used in the narrative/book style reports.
