For that matter, I've found errors in birth and death certificates which usually use family-provided information to a government official who may not know how to spell. I once found a tombstone showing a death date 10 years after the date on documentation. Further research showed me the person was moved from a cemetery that no longer exists and they used his new burial date as the death date. Sometimes you have to dig a little deeper for the truth.
I never believe just one source. I like to have many. Ancestry's user trees are highly suspect and like Family Search I only use the information as clues until I find a better source. Merging manually is the best option. Before someone on the list jumps down my throat and tells me I am being foolish, they need to carefully read the fact that I said I will not link my database to FamilySearch. I will and do avail myself of the information on FS, but I manually search their database and manually enter any information that I deem is useful for my database. I have no desire to sort through fifty people that FamilySearch's database has determined are a match for the one person in my database. The FamilySearch database is already fraught with duplicate information, incorrect information, incomplete information. These errors and duplications will grow exponentially as more and more folks decide to connect to FamilySearch and continue to perpetuate the duplications and errors.
