No, not really. You are alive or you are dead, and that is pretty much it. The question though, is what if the genealogist does not know if the person is alive or dead for sure? I have several people born in the 1910s and 1920s that I don't know yet if they died. They -could- be alive.
The argument is having a unknown indicator for living will allow the user to give a label to everyone to a more degree of certainty. The user either knows you are dead, or you are alive, or the user does not know yet. Hence, the option of "Unknown" for living was suggested.
